Connecting mystical realms & the cat dimension
Illustrator/ Card Creator
About
Mayu Miu
An illustrator and card creator depicting a whimsical world inhabited by hybrid characters of cats and other creatures. Through symbolism and imagery, her work explores intuitive storytelling, imagination, and the possibilities of card reading.
Born in Japan, she moved to New York City in 1995. She graduated from Hunter College (CUNY) in 2003 with a BA in Studio Art and Psychology, and studied photography under renowned photographer Roy DeCarava. She began her artistic career as a photographer, receiving multiple awards before expanding her practice into illustration and card creation.
In 2019, she successfully launched her mermaid cat-themed tarot deck on Kickstarter, raising four times its original funding goal. This marked an important milestone in her journey as an independent illustrator and card creator.
Her return to Japan in 2020 brought an unexpected new beginning. Amid the pandemic and a major life transition, she stepped away from art-making for a time before gradually rebuilding her creative practice.
In 2024, she independently published Little Mermaid Cat Oracle, a mermaid cat-themed oracle deck.
In 2026, her Fairy Cats Lenormand deck was published in Japan by Visionary Company.
Today, her work has grown beyond mermaid cats into the four interconnected realms of Hybrid Cats: Ocean, Forest, Sky, and Magic. Through illustrated cards and other creations, she continues to build a world where imagination, symbolism, and storytelling meet.
